Documentary: Juliano Mer Khamis Assassinated

I'm still in transit back from the Midwest, so only enough time for a few brief words about a very sad development in the world of documentary filmmaking.  Juliano Mer Khamis, filmmaker and actor (featured in several Amos Gitai films) has been killed near his Freedom Theater in Jenin.  His film Arna's Children shared the Best Documentary Award at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival.  Details about his killing can be found at Mubi and at the Tribeca Film Festival site.

Ray Privett called my attention to this story on Facebook, and he noted that Juliano Mer Khamis "did one of the most amazing Q&A I have ever seen, and did it in the ridiculous, chaotic basement room of a pizza joint. I'll never forget the way he took over that crowd, or the fierce attention in his eyes in a conversation afterward."

Arna's Children (Juliano Mer Khamis and Danniel Danniel, Israel / Netherlands, 2003, 84 minutes). IMDB: Juliano Mer Khamis' documentary on his mother, Arna, an activist against the Israeli occupation who founded an alternative education system for Palestinian children. You Tube link is to part 1 of 9.
